A Farmer’s Story.

When I first take up the permaculture design course, I started with the thinking that it is all about planting and farming. Little did I know that permaculture is about the whole living space either at a farm or your own home.

I later take up the permaculture design course in 2022 and only completed it in early 2023. The new knowledge in permaculture made me realised the holistic approach of living sustainably.

As a new farmer, I later began my journey to implement permaculture practices bit by bit and still continue to learn from other experienced farmers and permaculture experts.

One of the first few things that I implement at my farm as part of the design planning (and as these are the most easy to do) are the rain water harvesting point and compost bin for a safe and sustainable living. Note: At home or school, you can also do the same at a smaller scale to cater for your home/school garden needs and living space.

  • Rain water harvesting - just ensure it will not breed mosquitoes at home. You may want to put small fishes to avoid this. I let the tadpoles and frogs living in my home water container.

  • Compost bin - it will take longer to decompose in a larger bin. Use small containers to decompose your kitchen and garden wastes. Refer to our previous compost guide for your DIY composting (in our Instagram @ekar.lui).

Will share more on permaculture and agroforestry in my next postings.

Have a great weekend.
